Visa Run to Burma

Thursday, 13 October 2005

Mood: not sure
After being in Thailand for a month we couldn't avoid the unavoidable any longer. We had to take a trip to another country as we had been in Thailand for 30 days and would be risking over staying our visa.

The high tech landing platform at Kawthaung, Burma and a boat? Similar to ours

We booked a one day visa run to Burma (Myanmar) and my brother came along for the ride (fool!!). It was a pretty eventful trip and to be perfectly honest we are glad it's over.

Check out the high tech Customs post (left) and Public transport (right)

Our driver...well to be more precise mad man, drove like a complete lunatic. We arrived at the Thai/Myanmar boarder and then caught a boat (questionable!!) across the sea to Kawthaung.

Some lovely Burmese ladies wave from the temple

Once there our passports were stamped and then we were right back to Ranong on the Thai side. This is when the fun really began. After several near death experiences, nearly crashing into a petrol tanker, nearly knocking an old woman off her moped and several thousand blasts of the buses horn and skidding of tyres we arrived back at Surrathani. My brother encapsulated the experience for us all and kisses the ground when he got off the bus.

Once back on the ferry all the survivors had a several of cans of beer.

All I can say is.......never again!!!!!!!!!!!!
